What are the Best Vegetables to Grow in a Greenhouse?

The greenhouse is the best way to grow off-season crops. The greenhouse setting makes the environment warmer so that the crops can grow better at a warmer temperature. The glass of the greenhouse traps the heat of the sunlight and provide a warm temperature for the plants to grow. The warm temperature, many plants can grow well even if the temperature outside the greenhouse is cooler. There are many plants which grow well in greenhouse gases while others grow well in outside temperatures. You must keep in mind that greenhouse crops do not have the natural pollinators to pollinate the pollen, so you need to do it manually.

Tomatoes and peppers

The following are some of the crops you can grow in a greenhouse:

  • Leafy green vegetables.
  • Tomatoes and peppers.
  • Cucumber.
  • Root vegetables.
  • Carrots.

Leafy green vegetables:

The green leafy vegetables grow well in warmer temperatures, and if you happen to be in a colder country then you can use the greenhouse to grow your leafy vegetables. Spinach and lettuce grow well in warm temperatures. Ideally, you will need about 45 degrees to grow the green leafy vegetables. The spinach must be well watered, and the temperature must be maintained in the greenhouse.  While harvesting the spinach, you must harvest from the stem of the plant.

Tomatoes and peppers:

The tomatoes and peppers are another crops which grow well in a greenhouse or a hothouse. Since the greenhouse needs to be maintained manually with lots of effort you need to make sure that you grow the variety of tomatoes that grow vertically and not horizontally in a bushy way. If you happen to have a leafy vegetable in your greenhouse, then it will be hard for you to maintain the vegetables.

The cucumbers grow well in a greenhouse. The long green cucumbers are harder to produce, and they may shrink, so you need to wrap the cucumber and make sure that it does not shrink. The Beit alpha varieties do not shrink in the greenhouse so you can cultivate the alpha varieties in the greenhouse.

Root Vegetables:

Root vegetables like potatoes grow well in the greenhouse. You must provide better nutritious soil for the growth of potatoes. You can grow the potatoes in the winter and harvest them in the late spring. Beets are also another crop which grows well in a greenhouse. So, if you are a lover of beets, then you can grow them in your greenhouse setting.

The Carrots are extremely easy to grow, and you can grow a lot of them as you need only very less space to grow carrots. The only thing you need to make sure is that you need to provide enough root space for the carrot to grow under the ground. Carrots grow well in average temperatures too, but if you feel that your soil is too wet, then you can consider growing the vegetable in a greenhouse. All you need to make sure is that you provide a ground where the vegetables grow well.
